10 June 2022

Welcome back to the final term of this academic year.

Despite it being a four-day week, the children have been busy attending science shows at a London theatre (Y2 and Y3), participating in a Maths quiz (Y5 & 6) and engaging in a creative art workshop linked to sustainability (Y5 & Y6).

Thank you to everyone who attended meetings for the Y6 residential trip and Y2 transition to Y3. If you missed it please let the office know and one of SLT will contact you. As you can see from the incredible number of activities planned for this term, the calendar is steadily filling up with events so please do add them to your diary to avoid missing out.

Maths Quiz at St Thomas Becket school

Two teams entered the above competition and competed with enthusiasm. The questions were challenging, but our children rose to the occasion and made us proud. Unfortunately, they did not qualify for the final, but they did very well.

Congratulations to Carolina, Frank, Lara, Kelechi, Aaron, Aiden, Kyla & Ella-Jaide.

Competition time  – Design a Happy Habitat competition

Bailey (Y4) and Ms Yeboah are running a competition for children across the school. All you need to do is create a drawing or painting of a ‘Happy Habitat for VIPB’s- Very Important Pollinators.

The most original and colourful design wins a Humble Bumble Seedbomb and slingshot kit (for junior entrants) and a paint-your-own bug hotel with a packet of wildflower seeds and/or sunflower seeds for infants.

Please bring your creations to Mrs Fernandes.

Budding young poets

Jeremy (Y6) has organised a poetry competition open to all pupils. Children may focus on any topic but entries must be handed in by the 30th of June 2022 and handed to Mrs Phillips who will be on the judging panel together with Ms Bickmore and Jeremy. Prizes will be awarded to the three best entries.

Jeremy came up with the idea for the competition, has written a wonderful poem and felt there are many talented children who have the ability to write excellent poems.

An event not to be missed – Family fun day & colour run (2nd July 2022)

As a continuation of our 150th-anniversary events, the school and the PTA will be holding a family fun day on the 2nd July from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. on the school field. The main activity will be our first-ever Colour Run.

Due to strong demand, we are releasing more tickets tomorrow on Parentpay, and removing the limit on the number of tickets that can be bought; now you can buy a ticket for all your children (whether or not they are at St Joseph’s), all your friends and family, and for the biggest kid of all – you!

Click here for more information on the fun day including the timetable

On the page, you will find FAQs on the event, information on the coloured paint, as well as the health & safety waiver, which you must agree to, in order to buy a ticket.  We have done a full risk assessment of the colour run and the area and confirmed cover from our insurance company, the Risk Protection Arrangement.

It promises to be an exciting event; the Young Voices Choir will be singing, the Pandemic Steel Orchestra will be playing and we will be getting a demonstration from our local puppy club, South London Dog Training! Norwood Fire Station have also confirmed they will there with one of their engines and crew to meet the children.

So, please purchase as many tickets as you can, as early as you can to avoid missing out. And if you are attending, please take lots of pictures and make sure you post them using our own anniversary hashtag: #SJF150.

Help the PTA to help your school!

Thank you to families who have signed up previously to host an estate agent board advertising PTA events.

We are hoping a new board will go up shortly to advertise the Family Fun Day on 2nd July, with £15 donated by Northwood Estate Agent for each board.

It is too late for new addresses but if you would like to be included in future events please sign up here, it’s FREE to you and is easy money for the PTA.

Summer Holiday club

I am delighted that, subject to our funding being approved, we will be hosting this club again.

Mrs Odewale will be running the club and provide a range of activities and fabulous meals for the children to enjoy. It is an excellent opportunity not to be missed, so please do register your interest by downloading the application form and emailing it to Mrs Odewale

Second-hand uniform

We will be organising a uniform stall the week beginning 20th June 2022 both before and after school.

Please do come and have a look as there are items for all age groups; donations are appreciated.

Alumni event – 17th June 2022, 9:45 a.m. – 12.00 p.m.

Please do pass on details for this event to any past pupils who may like to return and visit the school. It’s the perfect opportunity to be shown around by pupils and reminisce about days gone by.
