Healthy Eating

Welcome to our healthy eating page for St Joseph’s.

As part of our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) education scheme, we actively promote healthy eating within and outwith our school.

As an example, we encourage parents to download the NHS’s Food Scanner App, which is a fun and interactive tool that scans many common packaged food options and gives you a ‘traffic light’ result in terms of food’s:

  • sugar content (how many sugar cubes does it contain?)
  • saturated fat content
  • salt content
  • calories (or energy content)

The app then provides suggestions for ‘swaps’ – products which are healthier alternatives to the one you just scanned.

For example, you may love maple syrup as a topping on your pancakes or cereal but did you know you could get a sugar-free caramel flavour syrup that tastes almost the same but has far less sugar, fat and salt?

Note that the app is not a ‘dieting’ tool, it simply allows children and adults to make better-informed choices in the shop, at the time of purchase, on their phones and compare similar foods to choose the healthier option.

It is accessible for everyone and we encourage all our community to try it out.
