24 June 2022

Another eventful week with so many things to celebrate and make us proud!

“Every champion was once a contender who refused to give up.”

I received two letters from Archbishop John regarding his visit to the school to celebrate our 150th Anniversary since the school was founded. The pupil leadership team, collectively wrote to him and he was delighted to receive their letter on behalf of the pupils with my letter to him.

Croydon Athletics 2022

The week began with qualifying events for the boys on Monday and the girls on Wednesday. Our team comprised of 24 girls and boys from key stage 2. They were totally amazing and worked together as a strong team, supporting and encouraging each other.

Children qualifying for the final participated on Friday in the long and high jumps, boys relay, boys and girls sprints for years 3,4,5 and 6, distance running and the boys’ ball throwing. It was a pleasure to see our children perform and make us proud.

Well done children and thank you to all staff who came to support the children. I was delighted to see so many parents cheering the children on, it really spurred them on. Thank you for your support. A full set of results will be published in next week’s newsletter.

Inclusive games – Thursday, 24th June

Years 3 and 4 participated in a range of games organised by James Tinney from the Panathlon Challenge. It is a festival of sports organised to develop both collaborative and individual skills through a range of activities:

  • Bean Bag Target
  • Basketball
  • Ten Pin
  • Tri-Golf: Putt
  • Floor Tennis: Longest Rally
  • Cricket: Hitting in the “V”
  • Athletics: Seated Shot Put Throw & Javelin Throw
  • Messi Football Skills

Some of our year 6 leaders supported children. My thanks to James Tinney and Mrs Mangan for organising this event and to Mrs Langford-Jackson, Mrs Steen-Plomer and Miss Langford-Jackson for helping. The children were exceptional and enjoyed challenging themselves and others in a totally supportive manner.

Well done everyone. Next step…..future Olympians !

Class Assemblies

Year 3’s assembly was spectacular and focused on the topic of the ‘Windrush’. The children shared facts and stories about people travelling to Britain from the Caribbean and the courage and bravery shown.

Year 3 went on to make links to the ‘finding your brave’ motto inspired by Mrs Mangan. They shared their stories about what their ‘brave’ was. Another proud moment for everyone listening to them.

Thank you to the many parents and friends for attending. We all took away an important message.

Aylesford Priory

Ms Ugbo led year 5 on a trip to the Priory to attend a Diocesan Mass for all Catholic schools in the Southwark Archdiocese.

Children came together to celebrate the theme of, ‘One Heart, One Mind’. Savannah led one of the readings and represented St Joseph’s. The children enjoyed a picnic with other schools and created memories to enjoy.

My thanks to Mrs De Jesus and Mrs Zengin for accompanying the children.

Reading for pleasure (with Dulwich Books)

A reminder to redeem your 150th-anniversary book credit from Dulwich Books (6 Croxted Road, West Dulwich, SE21 8SW), who will add a further 10% of credit to this, so your total credit is £16.50.

When you visit the shop, give them your child’s name, class and date of birth so they can match you against their list from the school. There isn’t a time limit to redeem the credit, but summer is the perfect time to select books from our reading list. This is an amazing opportunity for you to visit the bookshop, enjoy the whole experience with your child/children and leave with a text to enjoy.

Parking

I want to remind you regarding parking (again) following a number of complaints from our neighbours, which have now reached Croydon Council such that we have our new counsellor, Patsy Cummings, visiting the school on Monday, 27 June 2022.

Please do not drive down Woodend between 08:00 a.m. to 09:30 a.m. and between 02:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. as you will receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) from Croydon Council’s cameras. There are a number of signs to indicate this as you approach the school. Note that there are now cameras on both ends of Woodend, so if you have been reversing down Woodend to park – something which is quite dangerous – then please expect a fine in the mail over the next few days.

Please also do not mount the pavement on Crown Dale. On 22 June 2022, local councils gained the power to issue penalty charge notices to drivers who park or load illegally in cycle lanes, as it puts cyclists at risk of a serious accident. As I am sure you know, Crown Dale is not just a cycle lane but it also has double yellow lines, which means you should expect a fine from the Council for each offence.

Remember, inset day on Monday, 27 June 2022

Enjoy the sunny weekend and see you all on Tuesday, 28 June 2022.
